SCHOLAR'S DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES
Before we enter to the core of the subject I would like to answer some questions. Who is scholar? What is duty? And what is responsibility? According to OXFORD dictionary, a scholar is a person who knows a lot a particular subject, because they have studied it in detail. Duty means, something that you feel you have to do because it is your moral or legal responsibility. And the word responsibility means a duty to deal with or to take care somebody or something.
Scholar is not only a man who posses knowledge, but he has a great roles in the society to lead the society to the horizon of the virtue and humanity. The prophet Mohammed (pbuh) obviously says about the scholar that العلماء ورثة الأنبياء the scholars are the inheritors of the prophets, it means, prophets did not inherit money, but rather knowledge, And one who possess the knowledge of Allah and being the inheritor of prophets. He couldn?t live or stand without playing his role in the world. An Islamic scholar who has the knowledge of the divine commandments and Islamic standards and he comprises all virtues. So he should be the mirror of Islam and its representative. More over that a scholar is a trustee of the people appointed by Allah.
Let us read to the glittering words of Imam Shafi (r) إن الفقيه هو الفقيه بفعله، ليس الفقيه بنطقه ومقاله The real scholar is who becomes a scholar only by his honest deeds and activities neither his words nor his writings.
Did you read that one of the shining star of Islamic history Imam Hasanul Basari(r), applied the real duty of a scholar in his life. During the horrific tenure of Hajjajbin yousuf in Iraq. He built a big palace and he distributed the people in many ways. One of the Islamic iconic figure Hasanul Basari(r) came forward with solid hand against Hajjaj. When Hajjaj heard this report he commanded to jail and kill Hasanul Basari. Then Hasanul Basari come to the corridor of Hajjaj retaliate his strong denial towards him. At last he compelled to agree him and Hasanul Basari said that: Allah send the scholars to the world to exhort the facts not to hide it. This pale of history shows that how an ideal scholar will be. The scholars should intervene in contemporary allegation that raise against Islam like terrorism, extremism and so on. Then only the real Islamic preaches reaches to the common people and its revels.
We are tomorrows scholars,. The society expect from us more than we deserve, so we should be active scholars of tomorrow.
